Tangible heritage.
Oficis oblidats – Esparto reclaims forgotten crafts as a living, fragile heritage. Braiding plant fibres has accompanied us since prehistory, one of the oldest gestures with which people have transformed matter to meet everyday needs, yet this knowledge is now disappearing.
I learned to braid esparto from Jeroma, an elderly woman from Baeza who remembered her whole village working with it in her childhood. Pleita was made to become baskets, mats and ropes; here it is freed from its function and becomes a continuous line drawn in space.
What moves me is the collective dimension of crafts: entire communities sharing a trade, and knowledge passed down from hand to hand. Each piece is condensed time, a slow trace of repetition and silence, in which matter is transformed through a fine tension between form and restraint, giving rise to organic shapes that recall the rhythms of nature.
Unique within their series, the pieces may change over time.
